How I communicate

Alex uses pointing, gestures, some spoken words, and an established AAC system. Keep that system within the usual accessible position. Speak directly to Alex, allow the response time already used by the family, and accept the established ways of saying yes, no, help, or stop.

Useful example: Offer two available art materials, name both, and wait for Alex’s selection. Do not move Alex’s hand or assume a choice from an unclear response.

Access and learning supports

Materials and position

Keep the established seating and access arrangement. Use large, easy-to-see choices and reduce unnecessary items on the work surface.

Sensory comfort

A quieter space and comfortable sound level help. Ask the family about familiar supports rather than introducing a new sensory routine.

Instructions

Use a short direction, then the familiar visual cue if needed. Demonstrate with a separate example when that is helpful.

Transitions and breaks

Preview the next activity with the family’s familiar first/then format. Honor established break and stop signals.

What to report back

Describe what Alex did, what support was offered, and one situation that was difficult. Specific examples are more useful than “a good day.”
